Job Description
To work as part of the assigned group/class/area with the staff team to meet the needs of the children. Assist staff and parents by preparing resources and the play/learning spaces for children, maintaining their hygiene, monitoring health, behavioural, and emotional concerns, providing them with age-appropriate instruction and working with the Teachers and Teaching Assistants to ensure that children are safe, nurtured and learning and socialising in a positive way.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Closely and accurately follow the guidance and expectations of the teacher to provide a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children and create positive relationships with their parents/carers
- Work collaboratively with all staff demonstrating high levels of teamwork and cooperation
- Implement the daily routine and maintain a high-quality learning environment both indoors and outdoors under the guidance of the Teacher/Year Group leader
- Provide care for children, follow schedules and routines, support with snack and meal times, changing nappies, tidying outside areas and cleaning rooms and toys
- Develop and encourage age-appropriate learning and socialisation to ensure children learn basic skills and concepts, such as communication, manners, sharing, etc.
- Maintain a safe workplace by supervising children closely at all times monitoring for health, behavioural, and emotional issues and reporting concerns to staff
- Role model and praise positive behaviours of children and provide guidance or discipline (in line with school policy) as needed
- Undertake daily additional duties as required in line with the assigned duty rota
- Follow the guidelines in the intimate care policy when assisting children in all intimate care interactions, such as nappy changing, toileting and dressing/undressing of children
- Ensure that all equipment, resources, indoor and outdoor areas are cleaned or sterilised regularly and maintained to a high standard to ensure that the children are in a safe, engaging, and clean environment
- Wash bedding and other materials as required
- Set out snacks in a hygienic and organised manner
- Know, understand & comply with policy and procedures relating to: safeguarding of children, confidentiality & health & safety, social media use etc.
- Set up and clear indoor and outdoor areas and resources on a daily basis under the direction of Teacher/Group Leader and report and maintenance or health and safety issues as necessary
- Understand and follow the key person approach under the direction of the group leader as appropriate
- Recognise when children are in danger of risk or harm, take action to protect them and report any concerns to relevant staff
- Be punctual, following the expected times of day (7.00am-4.00pm) and adhering to leave and absence procedures
- Use English as appropriate and take responsibility for developing own level of English language as needed
Other responsibilities
- Attend meetings and training or professional development courses as required
- Take part in the PDR appraisal process
- Undertake additional commitments as appropriate/required in order to support the Early Years and wider school
- Follow all agreed School Policy and procedures as shared and in the Staff Handbooks
- Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Department, Head of Faculty or members of the Senior Leadership Team
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent as a minimum
- Should be thorough and caring
- Prepared to meet the physical demands of the position to play with, lift, or carry children
- Decisiveness, patience, and stamina
- Ability to communicate and understand simple commands in English
- Good interpersonal skills
- Some understanding of stages of childhood development
- Attentiveness to the needs and safety of children
- Acceptable police checks (or equivalent) from the country of origin and from all other countries in which the applicant has worked
- Appropriate references from current and previous employers, corroborated by personal phone calls made to each referee
